Hollein achieved a diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in [[Vienna in 1956, then in the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1959 and the University of Calfornia in 1960. He has worked for various agencies in Sweden and in USA|America before returning to Vienna, founding his own agency in 1964.

In 1963/64 and 1966 Hollein was a guest professor in the Washington University in St. Louis. In 1967-76 he was professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. Since 1976 he was professor of the "Universität für angewandte Kunst" in Vienna.
