Hand grenade
A hand grenade is a hand-held bomb designed to be thrown by hand. The word "grenade" comes from the Spanish granada ("pomegranate"), in reference to the general size of early grenades, and because its shrapnel pellets reminded soldiers of the seeds of a pomegranate. Grenadiers were originally a class of soldier specialized in throwing grenades.

Not all grenades are thrown; in the past they were fired from rifles or specially built grenade launchers. For example, tear gas grenades used in riot control are fired from riot guns, and the M203 is a launcher that can be fitted below a modern military rifle. '
