Hamish kept the peace in his own way, without undue reliance on the letter of the law, and every intention of avoiding being promoted out of his ideal job. Running themes included Hamish's attraction to both the local newswoman Isobel and the aristocrat Alex, and the tensions this caused; and Hamish's friend TV John, who seemed to have supernatural powers. The series had a slightly surreal quality to it, enhanced by the eerie celtic music of John Lunn.
