The paper was sold to Robert Southam (later Southam Newspapers) in 1877. After the sale of Southam newspapers to Conrad Black in 1998, Black sold the paper to the Sun newspapers in 1998, who subsequently sold it to the Torstar group of newspapers in 1999.
