Allegedly, 'Ham On Rye' is the first part of Bukowski's autobiography and covers the years from his birth, in 1920, to his rejection for military service in 1942. Although it is often considered to be an autobiographical work, it has become acknowledged by critics and biographers that Bukowski embellished and exaggerated to suit his own self-image of the rebellious loner - as typified by his alter ego Henry Chinaski.

Nevertheless, this book offers fascinating glimpses of the processes that surely made Bukowski in to what he became - his isolation due to extreme acne vulgaris for example - and although it may not satisfactorily explain his parental relationships it does dwell on the details of the damage they caused.
