is a politician of Independence Party (Iceland). (born August 24 1938) Son of Bjarni Benediktsson's sister. He dropped out of lawschool due to interaction in Icelandic politics. He worked as a teacher and a jounalist from 1959 until 1980. He gained a permanent seat in the Parliament in 1979, where he has served for the North Eastern part of Iceland. Counted as strong supporter of whaling due to his summertime jobs in whale processing from 1954 to 1974, but helped building whale watching tourism industry while he was Minister of Communication and Tourism 1991 to 1999. In the first half of his participation in Icelandic government he was also Minister of Agriculture in the first term of Davíđ Oddsson from 1991 to 1995. Since 1999, he has been the president of the Alţingi. Mr. Blöndal was expected to leave politics in 2003 since he was elected president of Alţingi in 1999, due to the fact that the presidents of Alţingi 1991-1995 and 1995-1999 were not reelected for parliament in the following elections.
