On September 11, 2001, Halifax International Airport was part of Operation Yellow Ribbon, as it took 44 flights—more flights than any other Canadian airport involved in the operation—carrying about 7,300 passengers—more passengers than any other Canadian airport involved in the operation other than Vancouver. Much of this was because flights that were coming from Europe were told to avoid the major airports in Central Canada, like Lester B. Pearson in Toronto and Montréal-Dorval. http://www.hiaa.ca/default.asp?id=190&pagesize=1&sfield=content.id&search=373&mn=70.1.14.64.73

The airport was moved outside of the city to nearby Enfield to try and cut back on the number of days fog would play into factor for the take-off and landing of planes. The HIA has started a major multi-year expansion project which will include a rehabilition of the run-ways, a new terminal expansion, a new parking lot and internal beautifications including an observation tower. the project will cost over 90 million dollars. The Airport has already completed the observation tower and the internal beautifications but the parking lot, terminal expansion and run-ways rehabilitation are yet to be done. The run-way construction is also making the HIA suffer due to the fact it is harder for planes to take off and land. the work should be completed by around 2008.
