Haarlemmermeer


 

(population: 131,834 in 2005) is a municipality in the north-western Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. The municipality covers an area of 185.28 km² (of which 5.52 km² water). It is a polder, land created from the sea. The name Haarlemmermeer means "Lake Haarlem".

The main town is Hoofddorp. It is one of the largest towns in the Netherlands after which the municipality is not named (pop. ca. 60,000). The municipalicy also contains Schiphol Airport. There are train stations there and in Nieuw-Vennep.
