Høgnorsk

Høgnorsk is a form of written Norwegian that is considered a more pure version of the minority language, Nynorsk. Høgnorsk retains some of the spelling differences between Nynorsk and the majority Norwegian language, Bokmål, that were later removed from Nynorsk.

Bokmål is traditionally much closer to written standard Danish while Nynorsk is closer to non-Danish influences on the Norwegian language which grew out of Old Norse. Reforms in 1917, 1938 and 1959 brought Nynorsk and Bokmål closer together but were to an extent still problematic. As a state policy, Nynorsk and Bokmål were merged into one language, called Samnorsk (Common Norwegian). However, this move was protested by advocates of both Bokmål and Nynorsk and later the two seperate languages were both made the state languages once again. Høgnorsk was retained by some users of Nynorsk in terms of spelling and other nuances, however not official.
