Guy Williams

Guy Williams (14 January, 1924 - May 7, 1989) was an American actor who played swashbuckling action heroes in the 1950's and 1960's.

He was born Armando Joseph Catalano in New York City.

An accomplished fencer, his most famous role was Zorro in two Walt Disney movies and television series of that name (1957-1959). Nearly a half-century later, Zorro is still being aired all over South America, from Argentina to Venezuela, in some places twice daily. Zorro continues to be the most popular U.S. series ever to have appeared on South American television.

After Zorro ended in 1960, Guy Williams made several action/adventure films in Italy and Germany, among them Damon und Pythias and Sindbad. He also made one final film for Disney, The Prince and the Pauper. In that picture, he declined the common theatrical use of a double in his sword fighting scenes and performed all of his own fencing.

In 1965, Guy Williams was cast in the science fiction Irwin Allen TV series, Lost In Space. He portrayed John Robinson, the patriarch of a space exploring family, the Robinsons, for three seasons (1965-1968).

He died of a brain aneurysm in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean off Malibu, California.

Guy Williams was the first "native celebrity" to be inducted posthumously into the Bronx Walk of Fame in 2000. Just one year later, on August 2, 2001, in a long overdue tribute to the fine acting talent of the son of Sicilian immigrants, Guy Williams, Jr. unveiled his father's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The following year on August 2, 2002, the Williams family dedicated a bench in New York's Central Park. In Oceanside, California, at the Mission of San Luis Rey de Francia, a commmerative plaque and bench were dedicated in Guy Williams name on August 2, 2003. The Walt Disney Company filmed four Zorro episodes in 1957 on the Mission's grounds.
