The airport was closed pending repairs (or reconstruction) following severe damage by Hurricane Katrina. On September 8, 2005, the airport reopened for commercial flights on Northwest and Northwest Airlink to Memphis. As of September 19, the airport has resumed limited air traffic, with additional service on AirTran and Delta/Delta Connection to and from Atlanta, and on Continental/Continental Express to and from Houston-Intercontinental. AirTran will resume service on an additional flight to and from Atlanta on October 5, 2005.
