Kahlo's parents were Hungarian Jews (originally from Arad, now Romania) who moved to Germany. He was educated at the University of Nuremburg. His father paid for him to travel to Mexico by ship in 1891 since he did not get on with his father's second wife after his mother died and he never returned. In Mexico, he changed his name from Willem to Guillermo.

In 1901 he set up a photographic studio, working for Mexican magazines such as El Mundo Ilustrado and Semanario Ilustrado. He was commissioned by the government to do architectural photographs, probably his best work. He also took photographs of Mexico churchs with other photographers for a six-volume survey in the 1920s.
