The main characters of the book are a white South African unmarried couple newly arrived on the island. The character of the woman is naive, and she entertains fantasies about the non-white islanders and their view of her, including her place in the power structure. She also entertains sexual fantasies regarding the leader of the island's "revolution", a young, untested, and politically inept guerilla.
