Groton School

Groton School is a private Episcopal boarding school located in Groton, Massachusetts. Often known as the "bastion of the elite", its student body of about 350 covers the eighth (IInd Form) through twelfth grades (VIth Form). The academic environment is very rigorous and Groton students regularly compete for positions at Ivy League and comparable universities.

The school was founded in 1884 by Endicott Peabody Sr., a former pastor in Tombstone and son of a prestigious Massachusetts family who subscribed to the model of "muscular Christianity" then regnant in the English public schools. Peabody, backed by eminent figures of the time such as Theodore Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, saw the need for a rigorous school for somewhat pampered sons of the Northeast elite. To this end, Peabody, who headed the school for over fifty years, instituted a rather Spartan educational system that included cold showers and cubicles. Peabody wanted to produce graduates who would serve the public good, rather than channel them into the professions, though this was often the case. The school's motto, "Cui Servire Est Regnare," taken from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, is loosely translated as "Whose Service is Perfect Freedom," or, less elegantly, "To Serve is to Rule."

The school has changed significantly over the past 100 years, however, though some of the traditions remain--such as a handshake to end the day, the school's strong commitment to public service, its small and strong community, and its attachment to the Episcopal Church.
