It is much more rare to refer to Grosse Pointe Township because the township is just the part of Grosse Pointe Shores that is in Wayne County. The tiny portion of Grosse Pointe Shores that extends into Macomb County is technically called Lake Township; this township is also rarely referred to as such. Jefferson Avenue is the scenic carriageway of these cities skirting the eastern border of the city of Detroit, although the segment that runs through the Pointes is called Lakeshore Drive.

Note that when a native of the region says "Grosse Pointe" they are most likely referring collectively to the four cities and the village listed above. A Grosse Pointer refers to them individually as "the Shores," "the Farms," "the Park," "the Woods," and "the City"; the last one refers to the actual City of Grosse Pointe. Newspapers and community organizations generally serve all five, as does the public library and school system, but municipal services are separate.

The wealthy Grosse Pointe area is noted for its extreme proximity to Detroit. Alter Road, the dividing line between the east side of Detroit and Grosse Pointe is much like the famous Eight Mile Road, serving as a cultural dividing line between poor minorities in Detroit and wealthy predominantly white suburbanites in Grosse Pointe.
