Greenville is a city located in Hunt County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,960. It is the county seat of Hunt County{{GR|6}}.
Demographics
As of the census{{GR|2}} of 2000, there are 23,960 people, 9,156 households, and 6,171 families residing in the city. The population density is 272.8/km² (706.5/mi²). There are 9,977 housing units at an average density of 113.6/km² (294.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 69.71% White, 18.86% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 8.19% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 14.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,156 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,606, and the median income for a family is $41,808. Males have a median income of $31,556 versus $22,373 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,231. 16.3% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.8% of those under the age of 18 and 14.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In early years, Hunt County was known as the cotton capital of the world. The world's largest inland cotton compress was located in Greenville until it was destroyed by fire in the mid 1900's.

Currently, the largest industry is L3 Communications Integrated Systems, a major U.S. Defense contractor located at Majors Field. This airport, initially financed by the local Rotary International club was used as a training base for P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilots in World War II and has served as a focal point for economic growth in Greenville since it was created in the 1942.
