When the station was opened with the rest of the Piccadilly railway on December 15, 1906 it was known as Dover Street. The name was changed when the entrance moved to accommodate new escalators in 1933. When the station was rebuilt the adjacent little-used station at Down Street to the west (towards Hyde Park Corner) was taken out of use.

When the Jubilee Line opened the next station south was Charing Cross but that station was closed when the Jubilee line was extended on a new alignment towards Westminster. When travelling on a Jubilee line train, the old tunnel direction can be seen briefly to the south of the station.
