The Great Wyrley Colliery meant that the town was formerly a mining town, with metal-working in outlying areas. The Wyrley & Essington Canal passes near. The town now serves largely as a dormitory for commuters to Birmingham and Wolverhampton, encouraged by the building of the nearby M6 Toll private motorway. The railway station is called Landywood.
