It is life from the point of view of a fly on a 5-star wall. It is the Depression and depression done in grand style. Where "People come, people go. Nothing ever happens."

The film came from the original German play by Vicki Baum as adapted by William A. Drake and Béla Balázs. It was produced by Irving Thalberg and Paul Bern at MGM, and directed by Edmund Goulding. The top star, Greta Garbo delivered her famous "I want to be alone," in this film. The cast included a series of top names: Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Lewis Stone and Jean Hersholt.

Grand Hotel won the Best Picture Oscar, the only one for which it received a nomination. The 1945 remake Week-End at the Waldorf starring Ginger Rogers is very well forgotten.
