Education
The Grand Forks Public Schools system includes both the school district of Grand Forks and the school district of the Grand Forks Air Force Base. 7,600 students attend schools in the school system. There are twelve elementary schools, four middle schools, and two high schools. The Grand Forks Public Schools system also operates an "alternative high school" and an adult education program. The Grand Forks Public School District is governed by a nine member board of elected representatives. The budget of the school system sits at around $45.5 million.

Higher education
Grand Forks is the home of the University of North Dakota (UND). UND is the largest and oldest university in the region and serves over 13,000 students. UND is the home of the only schools of medicine and law in the state. UND is also known for its impressive John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. The current president of UND is Dr. Charles Kupchella.

UND is a part of the Red River Valley Research Corridor and is a leader in many fields of research. The Energy and Environmental Research Center is one of the most prominent research institutions at UND. The University also does extensive research in health and medicine.

The athletic teams of the University of North Dakota are known as the Fighting Sioux. The teams are usually very competitive and their home games are well attended. The men's hockey team is the most popular team at UND. They play in the impressive $100+ million Ralph Engelstad Arena. Most of the facilities that the Fighting Sioux teams use are quite new. These include the city-owned Alerus Center (football) and the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center (basketball and volleyball).

UND brings a sense of culture and worldliness to Grand Forks that other large communities in the region do not quite have. People from all over the world attend UND and many different cultures are represented on campus. The Chester Fritz Auditorium, located at UND, brings many national entertainment acts including Broadway musicals. The Chester Fritz also is used for readings and lectures by visiting speakers. The yearly UND Writer's Conference brings many nationally recognized authors to Grand Forks.
