Economy
The economy of Grand Forks has historically been dependent on the surrounding agricultural lands. However, since the middle part of the 20th Century, Grand Forks' economy has become somewhat more independent. Now, government (federal, state, and civic) and the healthcare industry dominate the employment scene in the city. The University of North Dakota is the largest employer in the metropolitan area. Grand Forks Air Force Base also employs a number of civilian workers in addition to their enlisted personnel. Altru Health System is the largest non-government employer.

City leaders have long tried to land major firms which would provide a large number of well paying jobs, but the effort still goes on to this day. The relatively high paying jobs at the Energy and Environmental Research Center at UND are a prime example of the kind of jobs the city is currently seeking more of.
