Fictional Grading Systems

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

The fictional educational system for witches and wizards presented in the Harry Potter series of novels by J.K. Rowling has two levels of examination: Ordinary Wizarding Level (OWL) and Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test (NEWT), which roughly correspond to the O-Level (now replaced by GCSE) and A-level examinations used in the United Kingdom. The grading system for OWL's is as follows:

  • Outstanding (O)
  • Exceeds Expectations (E)
  • Acceptable (A)
  • Poor (P)
  • Dreadful (D)
  • Troll (T)
  • (This may have been intended to parody of the E-S-N-U system described earlier.) In order to proceed to NEWT, a student usually needs to have achieved at least an E in their OWL of the same subject, although some professors (e.g. Severus Snape) insist upon an O-grade.
