Grace Slick

Grace Barnett Wing, better known by her married name, Grace Slick (b. 30 October 1939), was the lead singer with the rock groups The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, and Jefferson Starship in the 1960s through the 1980s.

She was born in Evanston, Illinois, the daughter of Ivan W. Wing and his wife Virginia Barnett.

Her only daughter, China Wing Kantner (b. 1971, sometimes known as China Slick Kantner), now a video personality, was fathered by Paul Kantner, a Jefferson Airplane guitarist. Despite a persistent urban legend, China was not almost named 'god' (see Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/godslick.htm).

Grace married Gerald "Jerry" Slick, a cinematographer, and Skip Johnson, a Jefferson Starship lighting designer.

Grace Slick, who left the Starship in 1988, is now retired and enjoys painting, is an advocate for animal rights, and also still enjoys working on music.

Grace Slick was very famous for her controversial lyrics, drug use, and public persona. She once planned to lace Nixon's tea with LSD, but was thwarted by Secret Service agents. Some of her solo albums are Manhole, Dreams, and Welcome to the Wrecking Ball. Notable songs recorded with Jefferson Airplane/Starship include "White Rabbit", "Somebody to Love", "We Built This City" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us".

Alongside her close contemporary Janis Joplin, Grace Slick was an important but much-underrated figure in the development of rock music in the late Sixties. Her distinctive vocal style exerted a definite influence on other female performers, such Sandy Denny and, like Joplin, Slick's uncompromising persona and powerful voice helped to open up new modes of expression for female performers, giving a new legitimacy to the role of the female lead singer in the male-dominated world of popular music.
