Executive Branch
The executive branch of New York City is responsible for all city services, police and fire protection, enforcement of all city and state laws within the city, prosecution of crimes, and administration of public property and all public agencies.

The Mayor
The executive branch is headed by the Mayor of New York City, who is elected by direct popular vote by the people. The current mayor is Michael Bloomberg, a Republican. Though he was a lifelong Democrat, it's said he chose to run on the Republican ticket to avoid the contentious Democratic primary.

Deputy Mayors
The Mayor of New York City appoints several Deputy Mayors to head major offices within the executive branch of the city government. Deputy Mayors report directly to the Mayor. They are:

- Deputy Mayor for Operations Susan L. Kupferman
- Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding Daniel L. Doctoroff
- Deputy Mayor for Policy Dennis M. Walcott
- Deputy Mayor for Administration Patricia E. Harris
- Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs Carol A. Robles-Roman
:The Deputy Mayor for Operations heads the Office of Operations and oversees more than forty city agencies, including the Department of Transportation, Department of Homeless Services, Department for the Aging, Office of Labor Relations, Department of Buildings, Taxi and Limosuine Commission, Department of Sanitation, and the Department of Corrections, among others. This Deputy Mayor serves as the Acting Mayor in the temporary absence of the Mayor from the city.

:The Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding oversees several city agencies responsible for governing construction and local business, including Department of Consumer Affairs, The New York City Economic Development Corporation, Department of City Planning, Department of Small Business Services, and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, among others. Planning for the failed 2012 Olympic bid was included in this portfolio.

: The Deputy Mayor for Policy oversees the Department of Education, the School Construction Authority, and the New York City Housing Authority, and sits on the board of the City University of New York.

: The Deputy Mayor for Administration oversees the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Art Commission.

: The Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs oversees various agencies dealing with the city's legal and justice system, and also serves as the mayor's official counsel. The Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs oversees the Commission on Human Rights, the Office of Immigrant Affairs and Language Issues, the Office to Combat Domestic Violence, the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, and sits on the Civilian Complaint Review Board. This is the first administration which included this post at the level of Deputy Mayor.

Finally, the chiefs of the NYPD, FDNY, NYC Office of Emergency Management, Department of Investigation, and the Office of Management and Budget report directly to the mayor.
