The goaltender, goalie, (or netminder in British English) in ice hockey is a player who defends the goal net from shots. He plays in the area in front of the net called the goal crease. Due to the power and frequency of shots, the goaltender wears special equipment designed to protect the body from direct impact.

The goaltender has special privileges that other players do not. His equipment is not subject to the same regulations. He may legally hold the puck with his hands to cause a stoppage of play. If a player from the other team hits him without making an attempt to get out of his way, the offending player is penalized.

Stanley Cup Finals Game Four: The Inside Story (PA SportsTicker)
HEROES: Brad Stuart and Darren Helm. Yes, Jiri Hudler wound up scoring the game-winning goal, but he never would have had the chance without the efforts of Stuart and Helm. The defenseman, who committed a turnover that led to a goal in Game Three, prevented Pittsburgh from clearing its zone at the right point and got the puck down low. With Brooks Orpik zeroing in on it, Helm got in the way of the Penguins' hard-hitting blue-liner, allowing the puck to get to Hudler, who put a shot past goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury at 2:26 of the third period to snap a 1-1 tie. With an assist on the play, Stuart extended his points streak to five games.
