This standard defines data and voice communication over the satellite network.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the DVB decided upon a new international Application Programming Interface (API) for middleware between (1) the OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP), which is an ITV middleware software layer for US cable; and (2) the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP), the open, multi-platform middleware specification developed by the DVB. The ITU calls this new API "Recommendation ITU-T J.202," while the DVB calls it "Globally Executable MHP," or "GEM" for short. GEM could act as the execution engine for OCAP and MHP. (When it is to be deployed had not been determined at the time of this writing.)

As Japan's ARIB have agreed to integrate GEM into future ITV specifications and North America?s ATSC have agreed to base its Digital TV Application Software Environment (DASE) standard on GEM, all 4 open middleware platforms (MHP, OCAP, Japan?s ARIB's STD-B24 and the ATSC's DASE) could in the future share a common core. www.dvb.org
