Glenville High School
Public high school in the Glenville neighborhood of eastern Cleveland, Ohio, near E. 105 Street and E. St. Clair Avenue. (Original campus, founded 1919, at Everton and Parkwood; current campus, founded 1966, at E. 113th and E. St. Clair.) Today "Glen Hi" has an overwhelmingly African-American student body; before World War II predominantly Jewish. Among its earliest alumni was Benny Friedman, generally considered America's first Jewish football star; in the early 1930s its student body included a remarkable number of future cultural lights, among them playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Willie Gilbert, journalists Wilson Hirschfeld and Hal Lebowitz, talent agent Sy Heller, editor/writer Charlotte Plimmer, and the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
