Gift (Kielland novel)

The book Gift (which means poison) from the Norwegian writer Alexander Kielland is mainly social critic. In this rather important book we meet Little Marius, who is a poor schoolboy who eventually dies from learning latin. The book critizises the schoolsystem harshly, it was a major problem in the days this book was written (1883). Marius dies after the first half of the novel with the last words Mensa rotunda. The real main character of the book is Marius' friend Abraham Løvdahl, the son of a respected doctor. His mother Wenche is an idealist who struggles in vain to make her son honest and brave. Eventually Wenche desides to take her own life after getting pregnate with the business man Michal Mordtmann. Gift is the first novel in a trilogy: Fortuna (1884) and St. Hans Fest (1887).
