Two telemovie sequels were attempted. In the first, Gidget Grows Up (1969) Gidget gives up on her long-standing boyfriend Moondoggie; In the second, Gidget's Summer Reunion (1985) she has married him. A sitcom series The New Gidget followed the 1985 telemovie and ran for two seasons, but neither sequel gained the cult following of the original series.
