His current show, The Gerry Ryan Show, which began in 1988, is Ireland's most popular radio programme, attracting a daily audience of over 400,000. He is known for his style of non-stop banter which ignores taboos about daytime brodcasting of sexually-explicit material, as well as frequently revealing his contempt for Irish people and his love of everything American. He often causes outrage among his intended audience and contemptuous dismissal in the press, but since Ryan's status as Ireland's premier "shock jock" ensures consistently high ratings, his show is likely to endure.

Ryan was chosen by RTÉ to co-present the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, where he again caused offence by gesticulating to the audience in the theatre whenever a jury spokesperson pronounced his name incorrectly. It is said that his co-presenter Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has not spoken to Ryan since.

Ryan has hosted several series of television talk shows, including Ryantown, Gerry Ryan Tonight and Ryan Confidential, but none of these ever had much success. It is often said that his perceived egotistical personality is not suited to television. He currently presents a series called Gerry Ryan's Hitlist.
