Germaine of Foix
Germaine of Foix (1490-1538) was a French princess of the house of Foix, whom Ferdinand II of Aragon, then the King of Spain, married in 1505 after the death of his first wife, Isabella of Castile. Although it was probably a romantic relationship, a major reason for the marriage was to lead to a truce between France and Spain, a tactic that was ultimately successful — the French and the Spanish became allies. When Ferdinand had betrayed Henry VIII (his son-in-law as Henry was married to Catherine of Aragon), an enraged Henry in an act of vengeance Henry married his own sister, against her furious protests to the aged French king. Germaine was widowed in 1516 when Ferdinand died.
