Gorrell wrote the lyrics, and Carmichael the music, in 1930 for a female friend named "Georgia". Ray Charles's recording of it became a major hit, and (in a mutual symbol of reconciliation after conflict over civil rights issues) he performed it on March 7, 1979 before the Georgia General Assembly, which on April 24 officially adopted it as the state song.
