He was born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, the son of George Nevill, 4th Baron Bergavenny and Margaret Fenne. He was an elder brother of Sir Edward Nevill who was executed in 1540 charged with "devising to maintain, promote, and advance one Reginald Pole, late Dean of Exeter, enemy of the King, beyond the sea, and to deprive the King". (Reginald Pole was a Catholic exile and seems to have been a cousin of Nevill's). They had two sisters, Jane and Elizabeth.
