His father was wealthy American businessman George Herbert Walker. He is the father of Chief Judge John M. Walker, Jr. and U.S. Ambassador to Hungary George Herbert Walker III. He is the uncle of President George Herbert Walker Bush, to which he was extremely close. "Uncle Herbie" helped sponsor President George H.W. Bush's entry into the oil business in the 1950s. He was a member of Yale's Skull and Bones Society.
