Georg Henrik von Wright


 

Georg Henrik von Wright (June 14, 1916June 16, 2003) was a Finnish philosopher (his mother tongue being Swedish), who succeeded Ludwig Wittgenstein as professor at the University of Cambridge. ("von Wright" is pronounced not as rite, but as, roughly, vrihkt.)

G. H. von Wright made several contributions in philosophy. He also edited and published the late work of Wittgenstein. During his last 20 years he wrote several books about the current society and whether our progress can really be considered progress. One well known work is entitled "Myth of Progress".

He was influenced by the philosopher Oswald Spengler and found out later in his life that Wittgenstein also had read Spengler's work, and (to the astonishment of von Wright) liked it as well.
