Gentofte


 

Gentofte is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Copenhagen County on the east coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 26 km², and has a total population of 68,991 (2005). Its mayor is Hans Toft, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party. Toft has served as mayor since since 1993.

The municipality is an amalgamation of seven formerly independent towns, all lying in close proximity to one another. The site of its municipal council is the town of Charlottenlund. The other towns are Dyssegård, Gentofte, Hellerup, Klampenborg, Ordrup, and Vangede.

Neighboring municipalities are Lyngby-Taarbæk to the north, Gladsaxe to the west, and Copenhagen to the south. To the east is the Øresund, the strait that separates Zealand from Sweden.
