The US rank "General of the Army" (five stars),literally in french "Général de l'Armée" , is not an existing military rank in France. The french equivalent position is "Maréchal de France" , which is not a military rank but a dignity ("dignité dans l'Etat"). Meanwile, if the former US rank "General of the armies" (6 stars expected) was today readmited, the french "dignité de Maréchal de France" would be the equivalent position. The "Maréchal de France" displays seven stars on his uniform.

The French position of "Général d'armée" is not a rank but a "rang et appellation",which is confered to a Major General ("Général de division") when he is appointed for high level Duty (Chief of staff, etc...).It is the highest military position in the french army. The "Général d'armée" displays five stars on his uniform , but it is the same level as a four star US General.

In contradiction with that is sometimes described, no french General displays or had displayed in the past six stars on his uniform.
