~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The village name is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means 'wooded hill where goats are kept'. In the Domesday Book in 1086 it was recorded as Gateherst. At that time the manor was owned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
