Gary Smith, a former professional hockey player, was born in Ottawa, Ontario on February 4, 1944.

Smith won the Memorial Cup with the Toronto Marlies in goal in 1964. Entering the NHL he earned the nickname Suitcase Smith because of the large number of teams he played for. His first succeess was sharing the Vezina Trophy with Tony Esposito when he played with the Chicago Blackhawks. In 1974–1975 he also had a great season with the Vancouver Canucks with 72 games palyed and six shutouts.In 1979 when he was in the WHA with the Winnipeg Jets he led them to an Avco Cup. He played for many other teams including the California Golden Seals.
