Beginning with a barrage of loud sound effects, like guns firing and tires squealing, this intrusive introduction led to the term "going on like Gangbusters". As less and less people knew of Gangbusters, the phrase became shortened to just "going gangbusters" or "like Gangbusters".

The show was first heard, with the name G-men, in July 1935, and changed its name to Gangbusters in 1936. Its title was changed to Gangbusters (or Gang Busters) in 1936. It was known for airing closed FBI cases, which creator Phillips Lord arranged in close association with then-director J. Edgar Hoover. The show ran until 1957.
