Gallowglass
Gallowglass (From Irish: gall-óglach meaning foreign warrior) were a type of Gaelic Irish warrior typical from about the 13th Century until the English Occupation in the 17th Century. Initially mercenaries, over time they settled and their ranks became filled with native Irish men. They were noted for wielding the claymore (claíomh mór) and did not usually wear armour. The combined Irish defeat at the Battle of Kinsale in 1601 ended their recruitment and they faded into history.
