Gørlev


 

Gørlev municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in West Zealand County on the west coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 92,06 km², and has a total population of 6,556 (2005). Its mayor is Jørgen Arnam-Olsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Gørlev. Other towns in the municipality are Svallerup, Bjerge, Kirke Helsinge, Mullerup, Drøsselbjerg og Reersø.

Neighbouring municipalities are Høng to the east, Hvidebæk to the north, and Slagelse to the south. To the west are Musholm Bay (Musholm Bugt), the Great Belt (Storebælt)? the strait which separates Zealand from the island of Funen), and Jammerland Bay (Jammerland Bugt). The municipality of Kerteminde on the island of Funen is Gørlev's municipal neighbour to the west, albeit separated by the waters of the Great Belt.

By January 1, 2007 Gørlev municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Bjergsted, Hvidebæk, Høng, and Kalundborg municipalities to form the new Kalundborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 598 km² and a total population of 48,697 (2005).
