From a Distance

From a Distance is a song written by Julie Gold, and recorded by both Nanci Griffith and Bette Midler. The song is about how distance, both physical and emotional, can change perceptions, not always for the better. The song has a slightly hopeful message about how God is watching us. The song suggests that, even though there have been wars, cruelty, calamity and want, somehow, someway, we may yet have a little peace and love in this world. However, some Christians believe that, by emphasizing God's transcendent nature at the expense of his immanence, the song is grounded in heresy.
