HRH Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden

He was the sixth Grand Duke of Baden, born in Karlsruhe, on September 6th, 1826. Frederick died at Mainau on September 28, 1907.

Frederick was the fourth son of HRH the Grand Duke Leopold(1790-1852)and of his wife, HRH Grand Duchess Sophie, nee HRH princess of Sweden(Vasa Line)(1801-1865)

He was raised with his seven siblings:

- Alexandrine (1820-1904), married Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
- Ludwig (died young 1822).
- Ludwig II (1824-1858).
- Wilhelm (1829-1897)married with HIH Princess Marie Romanovsky.
- Karl(1832-1906) married morganatically with Bss Rosalie von Beust cr Css von Rhena.
- Marie(1834-1899), married to Prince Ernest of Leiningen.
- Cecilie (1839-1891), married Grand Duke Michael Nikolayevich of Russia
- Grand Duke Frederick II(1857-1928)who was the last Grand Duke after the fall of the german monarchies in 1918, married with HRH Princess Hilda of Nassau(later also princess of Luxembourg).
- Victoria(1862-1930) married with King Gustav V of Sweden.
- Prince Ludwig(1865-1888).
He became the heir to the Grand Duchy upon the death of his father in 1852. Due to his brother's mental incompetency, he was regent from 1852-1858. After his brother's death in 1858, he became the Grand Duke.

Considered as a monarch of some importance, he introduced many political reforms that reflected the times in which he lived.

In 1856 he married HRH Princess Louise of Prussia, daughter of HIM(at the time the crown prince)Wilhelm I and his wife HIM the Empress Augusta nee HRH Princess of Saxe-Weimar.

He was present at the proclamation of the German Empire in Versailles in 1871, as he was the only son-in-law of the Emperor.

He died peacefully on his summer residence in the island of Mainau(Germany) on September 28 1907. Mainau is now owned by the descendants of his great-grandson Count Lennart Bernardotte(1909-2005).
