The Grizzlies began play in 1998, ending a 92-year hiatus of Triple-A baseball in Fresno. They had been known previously as the Phoenix Firebirds. The team was relocated from Phoenix after the 1997 season because the Arizona Diamonbacks franchise had been awarded. During this time the Grizzlies played at Pete Beiden Field at California State University, Fresno. An earlier PCL team, the Fresno Raisin Eaters, played one year in the PCL in 1906 before moving to Sacramento for the 1907 season. During the interim, Fresno fielded teams in both the California League and the California State League.
