Freguesia

A freguesia is a secondary local administrative unit in Portugal and the former Portuguese overseas province of Macao. It may be translated as "civil parish". A freguesia is a subdivision of a concelho (municipality). It is governed by a junta de freguesia.

Each concelho can contain many freguesias, but six contain only one: Alpiar?a, Barrancos, Corvo, Porto Santo, S?o Br?s de Alportel and S?o Jo?o da Madeira. The concelho and freguesia, in these six cases, are coterminous and share the same name. Entroncamento had only one freguesia until January 1 2004, but it was then divided into two. Barcelos is the concelho with the most freguesias; it has 89.

According to the Instituto Nacional de Estat?stica, there are 4,257 freguesias in Portugal.
