His work covered a wide range of styles (notably the avant-garde, rock, jazz fusion and contemporary classical), and was often noted for its blending of high art, rock opera, absurdity, scatological humor, and for its hilariously repellent and satirical edge.

Zappa had a large worldwide following throughout his varied career, in particular, the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and the Scandinavian countries. Although much of his work was critically acclaimed, he never found much mainstream success. Zappa, as can be seen in many of his trenchant comments about the mainstream music business, never sought such acclamation.
