Frank Wheaton
Major-general Frank Wheaton (8 May, 1833- 18 June, 1903) was a United States Cavalry officer, who was commisioned (as a 1st Lieutenant) in 1855. When the Civil War started, Wheaton was already an experienced officer, and was made second in command of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry. His father-in-law, General Samuel Cooper, was the ranking general for the Confederacy, whereas Wheaton for the Union. Wheaton's unit fought at the Battle of Bull Run, where its commander, Colonel John Slocum was killed. Wheaton subsequently took command of the unit, and led it at the Battle of Antietam, where it was kept in the rear and out of the battle. In November of 1862, Wheaton was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers, and placed in command of the Third Brigade, Third Division, Sixth Corps. He led them in heavy fighting at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was also present at the Battle of Gettysburg.

As a Liuetenant Colonel in the Regular Army, Wheaton was in command of the First Cavalry in Oregon during the Modoc War. Following his defeat at the First Battle of the Stronghold, he was relieved of command of the troops in the field. He was later promoted to Colonel, Brigadier General, and Major General. He retired from the army in 1897.
