Armistice
An armistice was signed on January 28, 1871, ten days after Wilhelm's proclamation as German emperor at Versailles. The preliminary Franco-German peace treaty was signed at Versailles on February 26 1871.

The Treaty of Frankfurt signed on (May 10, 1871) stipulated that France was to pay Germany a war indemnity of 5 billion francs and to cede three eastern départements (Alsace and Lorraine) originally seized from the Holy Roman Empire by Louis XIV.
