Francis S. Bartow
Francis Stebbins Bartow, the first Confederate officer to die in the American Civil War was born September 6, 1816 in Savannah, Georgia. He was a delegate to the Georgia convention to secede from the Union. He was made a captain in May of 1861, a colonel in June of that same year and then a Brigadier general right before the Battle of First Manassas on July 21, 1861, where is was mortally wounded.
